SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Delivering the project six months ahead of schedule and more than $100million under budget, the joint venture (JV) design-build team of ClarkConstruction Group, LLC, and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., hascompleted construction of the new 1,000,000-square-foot (total campus)Naval Hospital at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.



HKS Architects, Inc., Los Angeles, was the project architect-of-record,while HDR Architecture, Inc., San Diego, served as the architecturaldesigner for the new hospital. Young+Co., Inc. of San Diego, HDRArchitects and HKS Architects collaborated on the interior design.

Dignitaries with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC)Southwest, the construction team and hospital commemorated theextraordinary feat during an official ceremony held October 17thto pass the facility key from the Clark/McCarthy JV to NAVFAC to theNavy Medicine. Representatives of all parties were on hand to celebratethe occasion.

"The replacement hospital is a facility 'catch-up' for the progress ofmodern medicine, since the last facility was built in the early 1970s,"said Capt. Mark A. Kobelja, commanding officer of the Naval HospitalMarine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. "The new facility utilizesevidence-based design to enhance healing for patients, as well asefficient and effective design to conserve water and energy, protectfrom earthquakes and optimize the work environment for staff. Designedas a like-for-like replacement of existing capabilities, the newfacility will greatly enhance those capabilities with the newestfacility and equipment technologies. Providing emergency, primary, intensive and specialty care, the newhospital will have 96 outpatient procedure rooms, 205 exam rooms,ancillary departments, support spaces and 54 patient rooms accommodatingup to 60 beds for non-ambulatory patients who require stays in excess of24 hours. Reflecting the mostly young military population it serves, thehospital will also have eight labor and delivery rooms, together with 16post-partum suites. Outpatient care alone is expected to reach around2,000 visits per day.

The hospital is expected to earn LEED Gold Certification and featuresnumerous sustainable elements, most notably an energy system that willoutperform baseline standards by 30 percent.

The new Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital is replacing anolder facility built in 1974 near Lake O"Neil that no longer complieswith current seismic, anti-terrorism, and general force protectionstandards for hospitals, and will instead be used for administrativeoffices and storage. Patients from the existing hospital will betransferred to the new hospital in mid December. A ribbon-cuttingceremony is scheduled to take place on January 31st.

The scope of work by the JV team also included construction of a centralutilities plant with 3,100 tons of cooling and redundant utility systemsto allow the hospital to remain independently and fully functional forthree days in the event of a power outage. It also included constructionof a 1,500-space parking structure and 1,000-space surface parking area,which will double the parking capacity of the existing hospital.

In addition to the Clark/McCarthy JV"s $394 million base contract, theU.S. Navy adopted two modifications. The first included the purchase ofconservation banking credits to mitigate and increase the amount ofendangered coastal sagebrush within the project boundary. The secondmodification incorporated roughly $42 million worth of medicalequipment, furniture and artwork. In collaboration with NAVFAC and theNavy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, the Clark/McCarthy JV teamdeveloped a medical equipment package utilizing the Basis-of-Designspecifications and the experience of user groups to select more than20,000 pieces of equipment and coordinate the building infrastructure toaccommodate it. Best Value Determination was used for every item,allowing the Navy an opportunity to compare models, options, maintenancecontracts and lifecycle costs.

"This later modification was a first for the Department of Defense andNAVFAC, and significantly added to the typical design-builderrequirements by calling for a team that was well-versed in medicalequipment planning, procurement, installation and training," said CarlosGonzalez, P.E., project director for the Clark/McCarthy JV. "Thisturnkey delivery method had a positive impact on the project outcome,allowing the team to maximize quality, minimize added costs and expeditethe construction schedule."

The design goal was to create a world-class, timeless, landmark facilityfitting of the prominent site overlooking the Pacific Ocean that wouldreflect the timeless values of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps whileaccommodating the latest in evidence-based design best practices inhealthcare services. Another primary goal was to achieve LEED GoldCertification " an ambitious aspiration for a state-of-the-art hospitalthat operates around the clock.

Sustainable design features include green roofs, healing gardens and anatrium open to the sky. The building"s energy performance is 30 percentbetter than baseline standards set by the American Society of Heating,Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The team wentabove and beyond efforts needed to achieve all five Innovation in Designcredits by using more than 20 percent recycled content, reducing waterusage by more than 50 percent, restoring vegetative open space that ismore than twice the footprint of the building, and implementing acampus-wide education program that highlights the hospital"ssustainability.

The design team fully integrated with the construction team from thebeginning through construction, working closely with members on eachdesign submittal and package to ensure constructability, expedite work,and control quality and costs. No major construction was started until65 percent of the design was finalized.

Since jobsite safety is a high priority for NAVFAC, the project teamimplemented numerous safety initiatives that resulted in zero lost-timeincidents through more than 2.5 million man-hours " an astonishingrecord rarely achieved within the construction industry.

"The Navy had very specific, high standards for the project"s safetyplan and requirements," said Gonzalez. "The project team not onlyexceeded expectations, but the processes used were readily embraced bythe client and the greater NAVFAC community."

Navy Medicine West was the sponsor of the hospital representing the NavyBureau of Medicine and Surgery, and NAVFAC Southwest managed theproject. Since April 2009, NAVFAC Southwest has awarded 107 AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) projects with a total value of$814 million. The Naval Hospital Replacement project at Camp Pendletonis the largest ARRA project awarded by the Department of Navy.

The second building in the Salem Preservation Society's series on Century Homes in Salem and the surrounding area is truly a house.

It is known as the Sixth Street Meeting House or the Wilbur Friends Meeting House and was built in 1872 at a cost of about $11,000. The large brick building stands on a treed lot on the north side of6th St. The original property ran all the way to 7th St. The area behind the meeting house included a number of stalls that could provide shelter for about 35 horses and buggies.

These were the most common form of transportation for the Meeting's members. There is also a small white frame building to the west of the Meeting House which was built for, and operated as, a school for the children of the Meeting.

The school was built in 1897 at a cost of under $395. Here the children of the Meeting learned basic reading, writing, and arithmetic, and were educated there until their early teens.At that age most took up work for their families on a farm or at a business. Some Quaker children went to a boarding school in Barnesville, Ohio to continue their education.

The Meeting House is made of brick and the walls appear to be three bricks thick. Most meeting houses were of wood construction, so this was unusual. The building has a rectangular floor plan roughly 45 feet by 68 feet and a broad front porch. The porch pillars are original and they have wear marks showing where horses were tied while their owners attended services.The front of the meeting house has two sets of double doors that are usual for a Quaker entrance - one for the men and older boys and one for the women and young children.Plaster covers the brick on the inside and tall windows were strategically placed to let in as much natural light as possible.These are protected on the outside by large white shutters. The foundation is of cut stone and rubble.The original slate roof is still in place.

Inside the church are long wooden benches with backs which serve as seats for the congregation. Services included the entire membership of the Meeting. There is also a partition which was lowered from the ceiling for the business meetings with men and boys seated on one side and women and children on the other.Each group had its own responsibilities in the Meeting. Men handles business, legal, and financial matters. Women handled the welfare and health of the members. They made decisions on how best to do this during the women's business meetings.This gave them experience working together to provide services outside their own homes, care for the sick and needy, and handle money, a truly unusual event in 19th century America.

The ladies developed confidence and skills that led to them calling for the right to vote.The first woman's rights convention in Ohio was held in Salem in 1852 to call for woman's suffrage.Although the ladies had to wait another three-quarters of a century to get the right to vote, this event is seen as a logical extension of the role women played in the Quaker faith.The wall is kept closed for most services now and, although it still works, it is seldom raised.

Business meetings now include all members of the meeting so it is no longer necessary to separate men and women.The wall may be raised for large gatherings such as a wedding or funeral.The interior is little changed from the original plan except that part of the women's side was converted to a kitchen and dining room and the ceiling was lowered.Initially open to the lofty two-story roof, the ceiling was lowered in the mid 20th century to facilitate heating.

Meetings are still held in the Sixth Street Meeting House on the first day (Sunday) of each week.On the fourth Sunday of the month, three Quaker Meetings from Columbiana County gather together at one of the three meeting houses, either in Salem, Winona or Middleton.Quarterly meetings for the Friends district are also held in Salem. The building is a testament to the skill and wisdom of the people who built it and serves to remind all of us of the important role played by the Friends church in the growth and development of the city of Salem.

British actor Tom Hardy has agreed to play Sir Elton John in the film Rocketman, the title to one of his most iconic songs.

The film is being directed by Michael Gracey and it's described as a biographical musical with a script from Billy Elliot scribe Lee Hall.

In a press release from Rocket Pictures published today and available on Deadline, CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw states:

Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton's story to life. We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team.

Tom Hardy recently bowed out of Everest, the story of George Mallory, a father and husband who attempted to reach the summit of the highest peak in the world only to perish in the feat.

However, Tom Hardy can be seen in Locke and Mad Max, soon to be released. The actor is one of the rising stars of British movies and has worked with Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception among many other films.


Rocketman is set to start filming in 2014 and promises to be a real treat for fans of the legendary Sir Elton John portrayed by Tom Hardy.

Suspense Thriller in "Wait Until Dark"

At the Theatre with Audrey Linden

"Wait Until Dark" at the Geffen Playhouse is a riveting revival of Frederick Knott"s 1966 play and the movie version starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967.This adaptation by Jeffery Hatcher with direction by Matt Shakman, changed the time period to 1944, which worked and established a melodramatic crime genre.But, the writing was very contrived.The plot points are important, but in setting them up,one by one, it was as if the writer had a list he had to get in which made the story contrived.It was overly apparent that the writer was establishing necessary plot points.However, there was a payoff in Act 2 which was electrifying and held me spellbound.

I actually chuckled as the intricate plot points were being established.It was a bit much with the repeated signaling with the blinds, and the telephone.I had an "oh brother," moment or two.And, the intermission was welcome.But, all was forgotten once Act 2 reached its arc.The suspense mounted, and though I had seen the film years ago, I forgot and was carried away as I wondered what would happen to our blind heroine.

Who could forget Audrey Hepburn as the lead, blind waif, Susan trapped in her world of darkness in the basement Greenwich Village basement apartment fighting off two murderers?Hepburn had given a stunning performance that took her out of the romantic comedy genres.But, Alison Pill, with her graceful and demure size, gives us a fresh view with her sharp, tough, and calculating Susan.Her performance was brilliantly believable and lifted the play out of the contrivances.

The storyline was a simple one.There was a doll stuffed with unmentioned valuables, which an unseen woman had planted in the satchel of Sam, Susan"s photographer husband, while sitting next to him on the train.She ends up being killed in Sam's apartment.The murderer, Roat, a smooth psycho, well-acted by Adam Stein, hires another thug, Sergeant Carlino, to assist in getting the doll back.Rod Mc Lachlan"s bungled and blustered Carlino was not fully realized, but, hehadthe look of a real police detective.Add Mather Zickel"s Mike, as the friendly and well-intentioned savior to the mix and Susan has her hands full.Mather, who also was in the Geffen"s "Vera Wang, " gave a credible performance, and there is a surprise twist to his character.Susan"s husband, Sam as played by Matt Mc Tighe was serviceable.The men"s performances heightened the character s of Susan.Clearly, Susan was the focus in this play.

The plotting of the knife on the table as Act 1 opened, the venetian blinds, the phone signals, the character within a character telegraphed too much and took the smoothness of the drama away.The flaws were in the writing.But, some fine acting in Act 2 heightened the mystery and drama immensely.

I loved Brighid Fleming"s young Gloria.Her energy added immensely to the play and helped lift the ponderous plotting.The two women gave stellar performances.Stein played old Roat, younger Roat, and psycho killer Roat but was stuck in a caricature of an Anthony Hopkins" Hannibal Lecter type.Stein broke out of the caricature in Act 2 and gave a compelling performance, which had me gripping the edge of my seat.

The excellent production values with Craig Siebel"s realistic and beautiful set of the 1940"s Greenwich Village basement studio-apartment contributed to the drama.Were the radiators on the ceiling?That was a detail which bothered me.Elizabeth Harper"s lighting, added significantly in creating the melodramatic mood as did the realistic sound design by Jonathan Snipes with not only the compellingmusic, but with the sound of rain.The rain seemed real as we saw and heard it through the windows and created a very realistic environment for this mystery to unfold.

Taken all together, this production, though contrived, made for a taut, suspenseful and enjoyable evening of theatre.

A little more than a year after Amazon announced a deal with MGM to bring classic movies and TV shows to Prime Instant Video, it has now revealed it has expanded this content licensing agreement.


This means that hit drama Vikings will be made available through Amazon"s US-only video streaming service, though it actually first arrived as a streaming exclusive on Amazon-owned LoveFilm in Europe.

In addition to Vikings, this deal will also see titles such as Fargo, Platoon, Annie Hall, Hotel Rwanda and more arrive on Prime Instant Video.

Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office investigators are focusing their efforts on finding one of two sites where a man allegedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old Carrollton girl after she was abducted from her bus stop earlier this month and returned, officials said.


Investigators think the girl and her abductor traveled south from Carrollton into North Carolina, with the incident taking place in southeast Virginia or northeast North Carolina at a location within two hours of Carrollton, a Tuesday news release from the Sheriff's Office stated. Investigators said they likely returned through downtown Suffolk.

Isle of Wight officials previously said she was also taken to an area within the county off Route 258.

Investigators are looking for an abandoned two-story wood-framed house with no shingles on the roof and partially collapsing, they said. The home had an old sofa that was visible through a collapsed wall, officials said.


Across the street from the abandoned home, the girl reported seeing a white two-story house with red shutters and a gray roof. The home had a wooden fence around the backyard and an SUV was parked in the driveway.

Two Florida Murderers Escaped from Prison By Forging Release Papers
This week Florida prison authorities accidentally released and paid for bus tickets for two convicted murderers who were supposed to be serving life sentences without possibility of parole.
The convicts managed to submit forged release documents to the Department of Corrections and even registered as felons with the state, as required by Florida law, before fleeing to a Panama City motel.
As a manhunt heated up in Florida this weekend, a "close associate" told police that Charles Walker and Joseph Jenkins, both 34, were hiding out at the Coconut Grove Motor Inn in Panama City. Yesterday, police found them there, unarmed, and took them both back into custody.
Jenkins, convicted of first-degree murder in 1998, was released from the Franklin Correctional Institution in Carabelle on Sept. 27. Walker, convicted of second-degree murder in 1999, was released from the same prison on Oct. 8.
Florida officials only became aware of the mens' release when Walker's victim's mother received a letter from the Department of Corrections notifying her of Walker's release, a standard component of the prisoner release process.

"Please be aware that recent actions causing the release of this offender are beyond our control. Nevertheless, we apologize for the delay in this message," part of the letter said.
The mother notified the state attorney's office on Tuesday, sparking the manhunt.
The men were hiding out at the Panama City motel waiting for a "transport" to another location, possibly Alabama.
In the meantime, investigators are working on a statewide review of release orders to determine if other felons have forged the documents. Apparently Jenkins had tried the scheme once before in 2011, but his forged document got flagged. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner said yesterday that the men may have paid as much as $8,000 each for the fake papers.

Jamie Dornan Reportedly A Favorite For ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Role

Jamie Dornan may be getting the call to play Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

After Charlie Hunnam backed out of the role, citing a busy schedule that didn't leave him time to prepare for the role, speculation has spiked as to who might fill his shoes. Reports say that Universal Pictures and Focus Features may have their sights set on British television star Jamie Dornan.

Other stars in the running reportedly include fellow British actor Christian Cooke and True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard, but the brunt of speculation appears to be on Dornan.

Dornan is known as much for his modeling work as his television roles. He is a former Calvin Klein model, and once dated Keira Knightley.

There are conflicting reports as to why Hunnam decided to back out of the role. Sources close to production say Hunnam, who is also a scriptwriter, wanted more control over revisions than the studio was willing to grant him. There were other conflicts with the creative team, sources say.

Others say Hunnam never actually intended to take the role.

"Charlie Hunnam was never going to do Fifty Shades Of Grey," says one source close to the production. "He told his agents from the beginning he didn't want to do it and was going to pull out."

Some reports say Charlie Hunnam was worried about being pigeon-holed in the role the way Robert Pattinson was with the Twilight series.

Reports from the studio say that the film is still on schedule for its August 1, 2014 release date. Dakota Johnson is set in the role as Anastasia Steele.

There may be a hitch with Jamie Dornan taking the role, however. His wife, Amelia Warner, is pregnant.

Hyundai stretching things with the Santa Fe XL

Stretch a Hyundai Santa Fe enough to add a third row, keep it powered by a good V6 rather than downsizing to a four banger, and what do you get? The “giant economy sized” edition of the popular Korean crossover SUV.

And there’s nothing wrong with that! Santa Fe has been a good vehicle for years now, and this newest generation is easily the best yet. It isn’t surprising, either, considering the leaps and bounds the South Korean car makers have been making in quality and “compellability” over the past decade or so.

The new for 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0 T rolled off with the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year honours at least year’s Canadian Car of the Year TestFest, and it was a deserving winner.

So how does Hyundai follow that? With the Santa Fe XL - in this case the “XL” standing more for “extra long” than “extra large,” since the basic vehicle is mostly unchanged from the “Sport’s” basic demeanor; it’s just 215 mm longer and with that extra row of, er, rather small seats.

Giving the vehicle the ol’ stretcheroo is a way for Hyundai to not only compete with such vehicles as Toyota’s three row Highlander but to replace the now defunct Veracruz as well. And it works.

One way to ensure the bigger and heavier vehicle doesn’t suck when it comes to performance is to give it decent power and, as mentioned at the top, Hyundai has wisely chosen to use its Lambda II 3.3 liter direct injection V6 here, which puts out a healthy 290 horses and 252 torquey-like things and not only offers decent acceleration but also facilitates towing stuff of up to 5000 pounds.

That power figure is up nearly 30 horses, though down about 15 in torque, from the turbo four, and about 100 horses and nearly 70 torquish items more than the base four cylinder engine offers. It’s also about equal to Acura’s new MDX (except for the torque), but since the big Santa Fe is lighter and it should therefore feel a little more nimble than the more luxury-oriented (and expensive) Acura. All things being equal, of course.

They aren’t equal, naturally - there are more differences between a true luxury vehicle such as the Acura and a more mainstream vehicle with luxury options such as the Santa Fe, but as far as being a mainstream crossover vehicle is concerned, the Santa Fe has nothing to apologize for. And that’s probably just as well, since it has no mouth with which to speak.

The current generation Santa Fe sports Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design philosophy, which works sometimes and doesn’t work others (it works great on the Elantra, not as well on the Sonata). It works fine here, though the extra length doesn’t help much. Still, it’s an attractive and modern exterior that houses an attractive and modern interior.

Power gets to either the front or all four wheels via a six speed automatic transmission that features a “Shiftronic” manual mode. No paddles, alas, and while the transmission works well and has a good number of “gears” it seemed reluctant to kick down and did so with a bit of a jerk. Well, the jerk may have been controlling the transmission…

The all wheel drive system only sends power to the front wheels under normal driving conditions - as a way to save fuel - distributing power to the rears only as the system deems necessary.

Other than that, the vehicle drives fine. The independent suspension is about what you’d expect - more rugged than you get in the average sedan, but not bowel-activating rough either - and the steering and brakes work and feel good. Brakes are four wheel discs, with ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). 

The steering features those seemingly unique to Hyundai driver selectable modes, which are kind of like a sport setting but not quite. But it works okay and when you choose sport mode it does make the drive more “enthusiast compatible.” You get three operating modes in all: Comfort, Normal and Sport. Hyundai says comfort mode is ideal for city and parking environments (it makes the steering wheel the easiest to turn compared with the other modes) by reducing steering effort by 10 per cent compared with Normal mode. Sport mode tightens up the effort by another by 10 percent from Normal and despite the extra tightness, steering is still smooth and easy.

Hyundai Canada’s sample Santa Fe XL Luxury was quite loaded and very nice, yet there were a couple of things about it that could use a rethink: the LCD screens. Both the one on the center stack and the one on the instrument panel are quite small, yet they’re crammed full of information. This makes it hard to fathom anything at a quick glance. It would be better if less information was shown at once and/or the screens were stretched by at least 30 per cent.

But that, and the kick down shifts, are about the only things to quibble about with the Santa Fe. Even the base Santa Fe comes standard with stuff like heated front seats, power windows, driver’s seat power lumbar support, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, and a lot more. Most of that’s pretty mainstream, but it’s good stuff to have.

Well, except for the audio system. Hyundai offers three systems, including a higher end Infinity that - given Infinity’s history in the audio field - probably sounds great. The high end system also boasts a 4.3 inch color LCD screen and rear view camera. Hyundai Canada’s Santa Fe XL Luxury test vehicle came with the middle system and it was of such quality that I’d hate to hear the entry level one: the upgraded system sounded weak and muddy, though it was great ergonomically.

The Luxury edition also included a really nice panoramic sunroof.

If you need room, the Santa Fe XL comes through, with increased second row legroom (50 millimeters more) and an extra 156 liters of cargo capacity compared to the five passenger “Sport.” There’s also rear-passenger HVAC controls and vents as standard equipment.

Santa Fe XL’s third row bench seat splits and folds 50/50 and you can choose either from a 40/20/40 split/folding second row bench seat (for seven passenger use) or second row captain’s chairs that reduce the seating capacity by one, but which will be more pleasant for those in the middle row. 

Safety equipment on all Santas Fe includes a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system which incorporates a Rollover Protection System and “optimally manages the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle in slippery conditions or during fast cornering.” Whew! There’s also traction control, of course, as well as seven airbags including one for the driver’s knee and dual front impact, seat-mounted front-side impact, and side curtain airbags.

The Hyundai Santa Fe XL starts at $29,999 for the base, front wheel drive model, which seems like a pretty good deal for what you get. Add on the packages and the extra driven wheels and the price goes up accordingly. For example, the Luxury AWD version starts at $39,199, while the top line model with saddle leather lists for $43,199.

Competition includes the Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder and Honda Pilot.
